MEDIEVAL REAL TIME STRATEGY Balloon raids and air drops

Research, workshop price, load with Q, then land behind the Watchtower line.

Balloon Raids

Balloons are the air skip in MEDIEVAL REAL TIME STRATEGY. They do not shoot. They carry bodies over mountains, water, and Watchtower roads, then dump them on a mill cluster or a courtyard. If you have never researched them, you will watch an opponent’s drop land while your Knights walk the long way. This page is the unlock, the load, and the raid. Ground mills still pay for the flight. Fund that from the windmill income breakdown before you buy a sky taxi.

The video on this page is CheeseRonian’s balloon-update walkthrough: new air troop, a snow map, and the shop path. Watch it once for the camera, then keep this text next to the match so you are not hunting the Armory while a raid is already airborne.

Unlock and buy

Balloons are not a castle recruit. Community and update videos agree on the loop:

  1. Build an Armory.
  2. Research balloons. The research is quoted around $250.
  3. Build a Siege Workshop if you do not have one.
  4. Buy balloons from the workshop. Purchase price is quoted around $100 each.

Until the research is done, the workshop will not offer the unit and you will think the game is broken. That is the same confusion players hit in 2026 matches when they see balloons in the air and no button at home. Do not upgrade a castle hoping the keep menu grows a balloon.

Balloons cannot attack. A naked balloon over a tower is a donation. The payload is the point: about six troops per balloon, loaded with Q on PC or the interact / hand control on mobile, the same key that loads War Wagons and boats on the PC and mobile hotkey table.

What the raid is for

Use balloons when the road is the problem, not when you are broke. Typical jobs:

  • Fly Builders over terrain to a farm the ground path cannot reach. CheeseRonian’s clip of grabbing a farm across a mountain is the textbook opener, not a late-game flex.
  • Fly Knights, Mages, Wizards, Crossbowers, Medics over a Watchtower maze and unload on the keep or the mill line. Community raid notes call this a Balloon Raid: mass the lift, evade ranged, land just outside the target, dump.
  • Skip a shoreline when you do not want to wait on ports, fishing, and ships. Air does not replace a fishing income; it ignores water as an obstacle.

Community chatter also talks about a later research so balloons can bomb buildings, and a cap around 25 balloons for a large gold dump (players quote about $1250 for a max stack). Treat those numbers as community, not a Spling patch ID. If the shop does not show a bomb toggle, you are still on the transport version. Confirm after the 27 August 2026 Roblox stamp on the changelog without fake patch IDs.

Loadout that actually lands

Do not fill six balloons with Swordmen and call it a plan. A drop that dies to splash is a gift. Packages that show up in public matches:

  • Wizard or Mage blob in the baskets, Trebuchets still on the ground for stone. Splash deletes packed Crossbowers when you land in a courtyard. Pair with the macro and army compositions page so you do not skip mills for the photo.
  • Knights plus Medics as the first unload on the keep. Medics keep the front alive through tower chip. One update note said Medics no longer heal their War Wagon; that does not mean Medics stopped healing troops. Check in-client.
  • Crossbowers as a cheap mass if you cannot afford Wizards. They lose to splash. Do not clump them on the landing tile.
  • Builders only for a farm steal. No army in the basket. Land, mill, leave a Watchtower if you can afford it.

Leave a home guard. A raid that takes a keep and loses three mills is a trade you can still lose. Split Builders stayed true on the first-hour castle walkthrough for this reason.

How to fly the raid

  1. Research, then buy two or three balloons before you buy twenty. Prove the load button works.
  2. Select troops, stand them next to the balloon, press Q. If nothing loads, you are too far or you selected the King by accident.
  3. Path around towers. Balloons skip terrain; they do not skip arrows if you fly through a Watchtower’s face.
  4. Land outside the keep splash, unload, then walk in. Unloading on the tower focus is how raids evaporate.
  5. If the defender has balloons too, you need Crossbowers or a tower at home. Air versus air is not a fair trade of empty baskets.

Squad habits from community writeups: melee in one lift, ranged on the ground (siege does not ride well), transport group as its own hotkey. Use whatever grouping the controls sheet already taught you. Double-click to select similar units if the army is a mess.

When not to balloon

Skip the research if you are still under three Windmills. Skip a max stack if a Trebuchet on the road would crack the wall cheaper. Skip a farm flight if a Port and a fishing boat would print more gold on a water map - that math lives on ports, fishing, and ships. Ranked after level 7 punishes empty raids; etiquette and buckets sit on ranked unlock and etiquette.

Stone still needs the workshop. Balloons skip the path, not the HP. If the keep is walled, you still want Trebuchets from wall-breaking siege notes. If you only needed the name of the unit, the full unit roster cheat sheet lists it next to War Wagon. The guides overview is the map back to openings when the sky plan fails.

A balloon is a six-seat skip. Research it, load it, land it, and keep the mills ticking while it is in the air.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for codes, ranked, windmills, and siege fights.

Where do I unlock balloons in Medieval RTS?

Build an Armory, research balloons (community price around $250), then buy them from the Siege Workshop (around $100 each). They will not appear in the castle recruit list.

Can balloons attack towers?

Base balloons transport only. They do not shoot. Some players mention a later bomb-buildings research; if your shop has no such toggle, you are still on the lift version. Confirm in-client after the stamp on the changelog.

How many troops fit in a balloon?

About six. Load with Q on PC or the interact control on mobile, same as War Wagons. Details sit on the hotkey table.

Should I balloon before three Windmills?

No. Research and workshop prices eat the gold that should have been mills. Open with the opening planner first.

Do balloons replace a navy?

They skip water as terrain. They do not fish. On water maps you still want ports and fishing boats for income.
