MEDIEVAL REAL TIME STRATEGY Windmills, Farms, and Cash Flow
Castle ticks, mill placement, fishing, houses, and the moment you stop eco for knights.
Money in MEDIEVAL REAL TIME STRATEGY is a timer you can see. The castle ticks about $25 per minute. A Windmill on a farm tile ticks about $11 per minute. Builders cost about $10. Barracks costs about $35. Community quotes put a castle upgrade to level 2 near $130. If those numbers do not show up on your HUD as identical integers after a patch, treat them as the working community baseline and watch the live rate on the mill itself.
This page is only income and the buildings that feed it. Openings belong on the first-hour castle walkthrough. Spend decisions that finish a keep belong on macro and army compositions.
Farms are tiles, mills are the building
Farm tiles do nothing until a mill sits on them. Send builders to the tile, place the Windmill, and leave. The 2026 beginner rule still holds: take the backmost farm relative to the path you will attack first, then contest mid farms. Back farms are income you keep. Mid farms are income you deny. A mill in a shooting gallery is not income; it is bait.
After three or more Windmills you are allowed to think about Barracks or a Siege Workshop. Before three mills, another mill almost always beats another vanity building. Watchtowers on a mill (about 40 HP, slow damage) are an attack on your timer. Do not repair-fight a tower with builders. Pull swordsmen, kill it, resume the mill. That is an economy play, not a hero play.
Split builders. One builder on the back farm and one walking mid is two timers starting. Two builders stacked on the same tile is one timer with extra animation. Builder Huts raise how many builders you can keep - cap around six, with an extra slot from Armory research. Buy the hut when unclaimed farms still exist, not after the map is already striped in someone else’s mills.
Castle income and the upgrade temptation
The keep’s $25 per minute is the floor. It also chips nearby units and can be upgraded. The upgrade is not your opening. Spend the first purse on builders and mills. When the mill line is ticking and a Barracks is already producing, then look at level 2 if you need the extra capacity players chase. Repairman from the keep exists so chip damage on the castle and on mills does not erase the timer you just bought. Park him. He does not generate money; he stops you from losing it.
Outposts are limited mini-castles. They are not extra mills. Place one to hold a mill cluster you cannot walk back to, not as a substitute for the third Windmill. Houses expand how many troops you can field. A House is capacity, sometimes with a cash side benefit depending on the current building tooltip - read the tooltip, then build it when Knights are queued and the cap is the blocker, not when you still have two mills.
For a short ranking of which buildings deserve a tile, use the building power ranking after you understand mill-first. Rankings without a mill line are trivia.
Fishing, ports, and water maps
Ports unlock fishing boats and the navy (attack ships, battleships), loaded with Q / interact. Fish when the shore is safe and farms are already claimed. A third mill still beats an early Port. A sunk boat is a mill you never built. The PC and mobile hotkey table covers Q.
Robbers, raids, and leaking cash
A Robber or thief stealths, steals about 25 percent of funds on an enemy castle, and must return home to cash it. Send one when the enemy purse is fat, not instead of your second mill. Spend idle cash and guard the keep so the bag never leaves. Raids are the other leak: a Watchtower, balloon, or Knight raid on an undefended mill deletes $11 per minute plus the rebuild. A Repairman and two swordsmen on the mill road cost less than rebuying the line. Dedicated walls wait for wall-breaking siege notes; a cheap Watchtower on your own mill is fine if the raid path is obvious.
When to stop eco
Stop planting mills when:
- You already have three or more ticking and the opponent is fielding Knights you cannot answer.
- The next farm is under a tower you cannot kill in time.
- Housing cap, not cash, is the blocker - then House, not mill.
- You need a Barracks, Hospital, or Siege Workshop to convert the timer into units that actually crack a keep.
The timed opening planner is the click order for the first minutes. After that, eco is a judgment: every mill is future Knights, and every unused mill after a fight is a keep you did not finish.
Promo codes are not match income. RTS for 500 coins and 2K for 1000 coins redeem in the Skins panel and may expire. See the active coins codes list and the expired codes graveyard so you do not type dead strings in the middle of a mill race.
Armory and Spell factory are late spend. They do not tick like mills. Buy them when the mill line is already the floor.
Play one online match where you only count mills versus barracks timing. The guides overview reads faster once you have felt $11 per minute disappear to a tower. At level 7, take the same mill discipline into ranked unlock and etiquette.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for codes, ranked, windmills, and siege fights.
How much does a Windmill make?
About $11 per minute when it sits on a farm tile. The castle itself adds about $25 per minute. Both are community-tracked rates - confirm on the building after a patch.
When should I build Barracks instead of another mill?
After three or more Windmills, or sooner if you must answer Knights. The timed opening planner shows the usual first-minute order.
Do fishing boats replace farms?
No. Build a Port and fish when shoreline is safe and farm tiles are already spoken for. The third mill still beats an early Port.
Can a thief steal my mill income?
A Robber steals about 25 percent of funds from the enemy castle, then must return home. Spend idle cash and guard the keep so the bag never leaves.
Are promo codes part of match economy?
No. They grant coins in the Skins panel. Check the active coins codes list and skip strings in the expired codes graveyard.
